The war on terrorism prompted invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 to remove the Taliban who harbored al-Qaeda, and Iraq in 2003 due to concerns about weapons of mass destruction and Saddam Hussein.

It also involved extensive counterterrorism efforts led by groups including the National Security Agency, including intelligence gathering, drone strikes, and special operations targeting terrorist leaders and networks worldwide.

Global War on Terrorism, The 1A

Despite efforts, the war on terrorism faces criticism for its costs and unintended consequences, including the insurgency efforts, spread of extremism, regional destabilization and the evolution of new threats like ISIS and in cyberspace.

In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the U.S. launched a War on Terrorism exhibited by the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and the continued efforts to combat organizations like ISIS.
