Changes in American society inspired many social reforms. With the expansion of democracy, many then sought to improve life for various groups. Preachers during the Second Great Awakening condemned many evils which fueled efforts to improve life.

One major reform effort was the Temperance Movement which sought to reduce or eliminate the consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic consumption, particularly hard liquor, was widespread and excessive drinking often led to issues of domestic violence, unemployment, poverty, and health problems.

Religious groups, particularly the evangelical Protestant movements, and women played a significant role in the temperance movement. They saw alcohol as a sinful temptation and a threat to moral values.

Temperance Pledge, Rutgers

In 1826, the American Temperance Society was established. They used pamphlets, pledges, and other methods to raise awareness. Eventually, 14 states banned the drinking of alcohol.

The Temperance movement sought to eliminate the consumption of alcohol in order to improve the lives of many Americans. It was temporarily successful in some states during the antebellum period.
