Hey APUSHers, let’s chat about the Rise of Conservatism as part of my series- APUSH in 1 Minute Daily!

Several different intellectual, political, and economic factors contributed to the emergence of a new conservative movement in the mid to late 20th century.

Amidst the social and cultural upheavals of the era, spurred by movements for civil rights and equality, many Americans felt apprehensive and a conservative backlash grew to preserve traditional values and societal norms. 

Elections of 1976 and 1980, 270 to Win

In response, the Republican Party implemented the Southern strategy to attract white conservative voters in the South historically aligned with the Democratic Party, who then shifted their allegiance to the Republican Party.

The growth of the federal government in the post World War II years coupled with economic and foreign policy challenges fueled dissatisfaction with liberal economic policies, leading to increased support for conservative principles such as deregulation and tax cuts.

Additionally, the Religious Right and Moral Majority promoted the integration of fundamental Christian principles into government policy and effectively mobilized conservative voters.

In response to years of liberal policies and social changes, a new conservative movement rose to push back against the perception of eroding traditional values and undermining of the foundations of American identity.
