After the Boston Tea Party, King George III was furious and famously said, “We must either master them or totally leave them to themselves.”

Americans differed in their responses to the Tea Party. While some, such as John Adams were thrilled to hear of the protest, others like George Washington disapproved. Benjamin Franklin even offered to pay for the tea himself.

The British Parliament passed a series of acts to punish the colonies. The colonists called them the Intolerable Acts while Britain called them the Coercive Acts.

The main components included 1) closing the port of Boston 2) reducing the power of colonial assembly 3) allowing royal officials accused of crimes to be tried in Britain instead of the colonies, and 4) expanding the quartering of British troops.

The Intolerable Acts were designed to punish the colonies for the Boston Tea Party. The laws increased restrictions on trade and personal freedoms which further disrupted the relationship between Britain and the American colonies.
