The New Deal policies of the 1930s laid the groundwork for a more expansive role of government in the economy and society that liberals sought to widen further in the post World War II decades.

The Great Society, introduced by President Lyndon B. Johnson, was a set of domestic programs and initiatives which called for a War on Poverty, aimed to address racial injustice and to improve the quality of life for all Americans.

The Great Society included the establishment of Medicare and Medicaid for healthcare coverage, Head Start for early childhood education support, expanded Social Security benefits, and food assistance programs like the Food Stamp Act.

Additionally, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were significant achievements of the Great Society era, aiming to end segregation and ensure equal rights for African Americans.
With a more educated and politically engaged citizenry, there was a growth of liberal ideas which catalyzed the government to continue to mitigate inequality and promote economic stability.
