The incumbent Republican president, Herbert Hoover, faced widespread criticism for his perceived inability to address the economic crisis effectively.

The Democratic candidate, Franklin D. Roosevelt, emerged as a charismatic and optimistic leader, promising a "New Deal" for the American people. Roosevelt's platform emphasized government intervention and relief programs to combat unemployment and poverty.

Especially when compared to the election of 1928, the landslide victory for Roosevelt reflected a widespread mandate for change, with him winning 42 of the 48 states and securing a large majority in the Electoral College.

In the Election of 1932, Franklin Delano Roosevelt secured the presidency against incumbent Herbert Hoover demonstrating the overwhelming opinion by Americans that the federal government needed to take a more active role in the economy during the Great Depression.
