Early in the war, the superiority of the British military was displayed. On December 26, 1776, Washington engaged in a daring military maneuver which included the dangerous crossing of the ice-filled Delaware River.

In the Battle of Trenton, the Continental Army surprised the Hessian mercenaries who were fighting for the British. Americans decidedly won, seized much-needed supplies which boosted American morale.

Due to significant disadvantages, Americans had to engage in surprise attacks and guerrilla tactics like seen at the Battle of Trenton. By avoiding fighting in a traditional manner, Americans were able to maintain their war of attrition.

Up to 350,000 Americans served in the military including minutemen, indentured servants, and African Americans. Women also played a significant role in victory by working as spies, attending to the homefront, occasionally fighting, but often caring for soldiers as “camp followers.”
The successful American surprise attack at the Battle of Trenton demonstrates the nontraditional tactics of the Continental Army. The actions and support of many Americans fueled their eventual victory.
