In response to the new challenges caused by industrialization, immigration, and urbanization during the Gilded Age, a widespread reform movement known as progressivism emerged.

Central to progressivism was the idea that political changes, economic improvements, and social justice could be implemented through a more active role by the government.

Many progressives were urban middle class men and women. With the growth of professional careers and spread of the ideas of the Social Gospel, many took their civic and religious responsibilities seriously.

Pragmatic and science based approaches were touted as practical and efficient ways to better society. Progressives championed causes of economic regulation, living and working conditions, political reform, labor rights, women’s suffrage, prohibition, and conservation.

In the early 20th century, Progressivism emerged to address and reform the social, political, and economic landscape of the Gilded Age.
