AP US History in 1 Minute Daily: New England Colonies (Day 21/309)

Jul 26, 2023

Welcome to day 21 of APUSH in 1 Minute Daily!

Today I will be explaining the main characteristics of the New England Colonies.

New England Colonies by 1677 National Geographic

The New England Colonies included the present-day states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. This region experiences all four seasons with long, harsh winters and a short growing season.

Due to these conditions, New Englanders did not engage in commercial agriculture but rather focused on subsistence and developed an economy primarily based on fish, furs, and lumber.

With the founding of Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, followed by the Puritan Great Migration, the New England Colonies quickly developed communities centered around the church and the family.

The church played a large role in the governance of the region, fueled efforts to educate children, and led to the expulsion and persecution of those who disagreed with Puritan principles.

The New England Colonies should be most remembered for the goal of religious refuge, the development of small towns, and the emergence of a thriving mixed economy.

Join me tomorrow as I explain religious dissidents and the Quakers in our next APUSH in 1 Minute Daily!
