In the late 19th century, industrialization and urbanization led to poor working conditions and inequitable wealth distribution which fueled the rise of several major labor unions.

Founded in 1869, the Knights of Labor sought to organize all workers, skilled and unskilled, and advocated for an eight-hour workday, better wages, and workplace reforms including an end to child labor.

The American Federation of Labor, founded in 1886, prioritized immediate improvements in wages, hours, and working conditions. It was a more exclusive union that allowed for skilled workers in crafts and trades to join.

The Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the Wobblies, emerged in 1905. They aimed to unite all workers under one large industrial union. It adopted more radical and socialist ideals, advocating for the overthrow of the capitalist system.

In the late 19th century, labor unions played a significant role in advocating for workers' rights, improving conditions, and shaping labor laws and practices in the United States.
