Today I will be explaining the founding of Jamestown.

The English Arrive at Jamestown National Park Service

In 1607, a group of 104 English colonists, primarily looking to achieve wealth similar to other European voyagers, arrived on the shores of present-day Virginia.

Early settlers focused on acquiring wealth through gold were unprepared for the difficulties they faced and many died from harsh weather, disease, and conflicts with the Powhatan Confederacy.

In 1610, with the introduction of tobacco seeds, the colony became more prosperous. The arrival of thousands of new settlers, mostly young, single males, led to an established, permanent colony.

The expansion of tobacco cultivation fueled increased conflict with local indigenous peoples. Additionally it led to an increased demand for cheap labor which was provided to colonists through indentured servants and enslaved Africans.

Despite initial challenges, the Jamestown colony began to grow in large part due to the cultivation of tobacco.
