The ideas of independence demonstrated through the Enlightenment and American Revolution had profound global impacts in areas including France, Haití, and Latin America.

Conditions in France were challenged through the French Revolution. The National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, similar to the Declaration of Independence, which specified freedoms and widespread inclusion of citizens.

In the most successful slave revolt in history, a French colony was overthrown. Inspired by many of the same philosophers of the American revolutionaries, Toussaint Louverture, a free Black, led the rebellion. A newly free Republic of Haití was proclaimed in 1804.

Between 1810-1826, most of Latin America expelled its Spanish and Portuguese colonial masters. Using the same rhetoric as the American Revolution, Simón Bolívar successfully led movements across the region.
After the War for Independence, the ideals that inspired Americans continued to spread globally. The people of France, Haití, and in Latin America successfully overthrew imperial regimes and instituted more republican forms of government.
