When al-Qaeda militants hijacked four commercial airlines and carried out the September 11th terrorist attacks the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century was fundamentally altered.

It immediately resulted in a surge of patriotism and solidarity among Americans, with displays of national unity and support for first responders and the military.

With increased fears over future terrorist threats, the U.S. heightened its national security consciousness, implementing extensive security measures across the country and re-evaluating emergency response protocols and disaster preparedness.

It also prompted significant changes in U.S. foreign and domestic policy, including the enactment of the USA PATRIOT Act, which expanded government surveillance powers in the name of national security, catalyzing debates about civil liberties and privacy rights.
