When al-Qaeda militants hijacked four commercial airlines and carried out the September 11th terrorist attacks the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century was fundamentally altered.

It immediately resulted in a surge of patriotism and solidarity among Americans, with displays of national unity and support for first responders and the military.

With increased fears over future terrorist threats, the U.S. heightened its national security consciousness, implementing extensive security measures across the country and re-evaluating emergency response protocols and disaster preparedness.

It also prompted significant changes in U.S. foreign and domestic policy, including the enactment of the USA PATRIOT Act, which expanded government surveillance powers in the name of national security, catalyzing debates about civil liberties and privacy rights.

Additionally, there was a surge in hate crimes and discrimination against Muslim Americans and those perceived to be of Middle Eastern descent, exacerbating social tensions and fostering xenophobia. 

In the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks increased emphasis on national security had far-reaching effects on American society.
