During the 1960s and 1970s, civil rights activists engaged in robust debates over strategies, priorities, and methods, reflecting diverse perspectives within the movement.

Some activists advocated for nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience, inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., while others embraced more militant tactics, such as the Black Power movement led by figures like Malcolm X and the Black Panther Party.

Debates also centered on the focus of activism, with some emphasizing integration and equal political rights within existing institutions, while others prioritized Black autonomy and community economic empowerment.
