Today I will be explaining the Columbian Exchange and its impact on Europe.

The Columbian Exchange is potentially the most important vocabulary term for APUSH Period 1. It refers to the transatlantic exchange of plants, animals, and diseases that occurred after the first European contact with the Americas.

While I think the earlier image is more memorable, this image demonstrates how the Columbian Exchange had global impacts instead of just effects on Europe and the Americas.

In Europe, the new availability of a variety of food crops, including potatoes and corn, led to more diverse and nutritious diets which stimulated population growth and longer lifespans.

Additionally, the massive increase in wealth through the acquisition of mineral resources from the Americas facilitated huge economic shifts. Europeans began to abandon traditional feudalism in favor of more capitalistic societies.
Overall, Europe had significant economic and social benefits as a result of the Columbian Exchange.
