During the 1960s, the Warren Court played a pivotal role in advancing civil rights through several landmark decisions.

Gideon v. Wainwright, Oyez

In 1963, the decision in Gideon v. Wainwright established the right to legal counsel for defendants facing criminal charges, even if they could not afford an attorney, ensuring fair trials for all individuals.

Mildred and Richard Loving, The New Yorker

The Supreme Court struck down anti-miscegenation laws banning interracial marriage, declaring them unconstitutional under the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause, in Loving v. Virginia in 1967.

Jones v. Mayer Co. in 1968 upheld the Civil Rights Act of 1866, prohibiting racial discrimination in housing, marking a crucial victory in the fight against housing segregation.

These decisions demonstrated the Warren Court's commitment to dismantling institutionalized racism and the Supreme Court's role in interpreting the Constitution to protect civil rights.
