For context, Europeans were challenged by the long, dangerous, land-based trade routes. So, they began to make improvements to maritime technology. Advancements in ship design and innovations such as the astrolabe and magnetic compass made these voyages possible.

We can break down the causes of European exploration into an easy mnemonic device: the 3 G’s- God, Gold, and Glory.

First, God. European explorers often saw their expeditions as a mission to convert indigenous peoples to Christianity. There was also competition between the two main Christian factions: Catholics and Protestants.

Next, Gold. This does not just mean literal “gold” but rather wealth and was the main motivation of European nations. They aimed to establish new trade routes and acquire wealth more rapidly.

And last, Glory. Rivalry among European nations fueled a race for territorial expansion. The drive for supremacy coupled with the desire for fame were strong motivations for many explorers.

The 3 G’s (God, Gold, & Glory) can be helpful for remembering the main causes of European exploration.
