The election of 2000 was one of the most controversial and closely contested presidential elections in American history.

The race was between Republican candidate George W. Bush, the governor of Texas, and Democratic candidate Al Gore, the vice president under incumbent President Bill Clinton.
Disputed Election of 2000, CUNY
The election came down to the state of Florida, where the results were extremely close and ultimately triggered a recount which became marred by legal battles, recounts, and disputes over "hanging chads" on punch-card ballots.
Election of 2000, 270 to Win
The Supreme Court intervened and, in a controversial decision in Bush v. Gore, halted the recount, effectively awarding Florida's electoral votes to Bush, resulting in an electoral majority despite losing the popular vote to Gore by over 500,000 votes.
After winning the controversial election of 2000, George W. Bush faced significant international and domestic crises during his eight years in office.
