Sep 04, 2023Welcome to today’s explanation of Aspects of the Constitution in my series- APUSH in 1 Minute Daily!
Constitution of the United States, Wikimedia Commons
The Constitutional Convention was held in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787 in order to create a stronger central government and to replace the Articles of Confederation.
Federalism, Britannica
One of the most important aspects was Federalism. This is a system of government in which power is clearly divided between state and national governments. The Constitution improved the system by providing more power to the federal government.
Branches of Government, Street Civics
Another significant aspect was the inclusion of Separation of Powers between three branches of government. The executive, legislative, and judicial branches had specified roles and powers defined.
Checks and Balances, Sutori
To prevent tyranny, a major concern of many Americans, a process of Checks and Balances was outlined. This system allows each branch of government to regulate the others to prevent any branch from exerting too much power.
After struggling with the lack of federal power under the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution attempted to resolve the issue with the inclusion of Federalism, Separation of Powers, and Checks and Balances.
