The Asian American civil rights movement emerged in the mid-20th century and aimed to combat discrimination, advocate for equality, and promote social justice.

Efforts to repeal discriminatory laws including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Immigration Act of 1924 successfully resulted in the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which abolished discriminatory immigration quotas based on nationality.

In Lau v. Nichols (1974), a lawsuit brought by Chinese American students, the Supreme Court affirmed that public schools must provide English language instruction to non-English-speaking students.

Japanese Reparations, The Central New Jersey Home News

Grassroots activism, such as the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and the fight for redress for Japanese American internment during World War II, played crucial roles in obtaining reparations throuh the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. 

Using a multitude of methods, Asian Americans successfully pushed the federal government to address past injustices and secure improved civil rights.
