The 2nd Wave Feminist Movement of the 1960s and 1970s advanced gender equality by challenging societal norms and discriminatory practices, focusing on issues such as reproductive rights, workplace discrimination, and gender roles.

After the publication of Betty Friedan’s Feminine Mystique, many women were galvanized into a new period of activism and several women’s rights organizations including the National Organization for Women and the Combahee River Collective emerged.

While the Supreme Court affirmed women’s right to access safe and legal abortion in Roe v. Wade, feminists were unable to garner enough support for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Other legislative successes include the prohibition of employment discrimination on the basis of sex in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the enactment of Title IX which outlaws sex-based discrimination in education programs.
Alongside other movements to advance civil rights, feminists organized protests, marches, and consciousness-raising groups to amplify their voices to achieve social, political, and economic equality.
