The OPEC oil embargo in 1973, triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and subsequent oil price shocks inflicted severe economic strain, leading to fuel shortages, surging energy costs, and disruptions across various industries reliant on oil.

Increased global competition and the decline of traditional industries like manufacturing, further compounded economic challenges and contributed to soaring unemployment and diminished consumer confidence.

The economic turbulence of the 1970s contributed to a reevaluation of economic policy approaches and a growing distrust by Americans in the ability of the federal government to resolve economic problems.
